Uganda: Standing with Women Human Rights Defenders
(Kampala, 29th November,2023) – On International Women Human Rights Defenders Day, we proudly recognize the dedication of Women Human Rights Defenders (WHRDs) who tirelessly champion the rights of their communities and women. The invaluable contributions of WHRDs cannot be overstated, especially when considering the unique and heightened risks they face as a result of their gender. They confront not only the usual threats encountered by all Human Rights Defenders, but also gender-specific challenges. Now more than ever, it is imperative that we stand in solidarity with WHRDs. Inspirational examples of courageous WHRDs are on the rise in grassroot communities, such as those we have recently encountered in the Karamoja sub-region and the indigenous communities of the Benet in Kapchorwa.

These extraordinary women courageously put their lives on the line, advocating for their communities, livelihoods, and the well-being of their children. On this day, we re-affirm our commitment to acknowledging and honouring the vital role of WHRDs.
