(Kampala-18th October, 2023) Our recent engagement with the mining communities in Moroto district, affected by mining activities, shed light on the urgent need for responsible and ethical corporate practices. In Tapac subcounty, we witnessed firsthand the social disruptions caused by irresponsible mining practices by corporations. The local community, whose lives are intricately connected to their land and resources, expressed their concerns and shared stories of hardship. We heard their voices, and it became clear that they deserved support and solidarity.

Our ongoing efforts to support communities we interacted with in Moroto in seeking corporate accountability are multifaceted. We are working collaboratively with the affected communities to document the environmental and social impacts of mining activities, ensuring their voices are heard and their grievances acknowledged. We are also providing them with education and resources to empower them in advocating for their rights and negotiating for fair and adequate compensation.

Green Deal Uganda is committed to fostering partnerships between the community and responsible mining companies to encourage sustainable practices and ethical standards. We firmly believe that accountability can be achieved through constructive dialogue and collective action.

Our mission is not limited to communities in Moroto; it is a testament to our broader commitment to advancing environmental and social justice throughout Uganda. We will continue to advocate for transparency, ethical conduct, and sustainable development, ensuring that corporate entities operating respect the rights and well-being of the communities they impact. Absurdly, women bear the blunt of actions of these corporations since they’re expose to gender-specific threats. We were pleased to see Women Human Rights Defenders (WHRDs) standing up for their communities despite the challenges and we will be working with them to equip them with the strategic tools to build their capacity and enhance their advocacy efforts. I was particularly inspired by conversations with WHRDs under their mining associations which is typically women led in a highly patriarchy society. I applaud these WHRDs for their courage, resilience and leadership.

Through collective determination and a shared vision, we will pave the way for a more accountable and sustainable future. Green Deal Uganda stands by its commitment to be a voice for the voiceless and a catalyst for positive change. Together, we will hold corporations accountable and build a more responsible and equitable world for all.
